The Raulane Festival of Kinnaur is a unique symbol of the region’s vibrant cultural heritage. This traditional celebration not only preserves ancient local customs but is also deeply rooted in the worship of the Sauni fairies, revered by the community as protective deities.

The festival begins with special preparations in the villages, where two men—known as “Raulane” and “Raula”—are chosen to lead the rituals and traditional dances. Dressed in finely woven Kinnauri woolen attire and adorned with striking masks, they transform into sacred ritualistic figures who lead the spiritual ceremonies.

At the heart of the festival stands the Nagin Narayan Temple, where collective prayers, cultural performances, and important religious rituals are performed. On the final day, village elders bid farewell to the Sauni spirits through sacred rites, believing that these benevolent beings will return the following winter to bless the community once again.
